New Federal Law for PFDs/New Wisconsin State Law for Boating Safety Classes
U.S.Coast Guard regulations require children under 13 years of age to wear an appropriate USCG approved PFD on recreational vessel, if the vessel is underway and the child is not below decks or in an enclosed cabin. Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, the bay of Green Bay, and the Lake Winnebago system are all federal waters.
Wisconsin now requires all boaters born after 1/1/89 to have completed a safe boating class in order to operate a motorboat.

Every boater should take a boating safety class.
Boating accident statistics show that boaters who have taken a boating safety course are least likely to be involved in a boat accident. An added benefit is the reduction in insurance rates for boat insurance; uo to 15% in some instances. Courses cover the latest rules and regulations, and instructors are constantly updating their courses to give the boating safety student the latest in hands on instruction. Check eith your local law enforcement agency or conservation warden to find the next boating safety class near you.
To date, the Calumet County Sheriff's Department has taught over 315 students boating safety.

The Model Harbor
The model harbor is a training aid developed to show the ralationship between chart symbols, buoys, and daymarks. The symbols on the harbor are taken from NOAA Chart 1. The buoys represent both lighted and unlighted, and also represent the federal and state waterways marking systems. The model harbor is portable and can be brought into any classroom.
